Outdoor Hour Challenge #6

As our whole family is S-L-O-W-L-Y recovering from the 12 day flu, we are slowly entering back into Nature Study and all things for the new year.  In Outdoor Challenge #6, click here,  we were to do some outdoor time, and then spend more time on our focus area.

We are focusing on Mammals, so today we focused on our pet rabbit Buttercup.  She is a Dutch variety.  We specifically learned several new things about her.  She does not have pads on her feet like our dog.  She has a type of eyelash, which is really a type of whisker over her eyes.  Our "cottontail" really has a tiny, black tail which is very different than the outdoor variety.

We filled out special Mammal notebook pages and drew pics of our Buttercup.  We also were to start a collection to supplement our Nature Journal in our focus area, which is a little more difficult with mammals.  But, you can see here our Monthly Bird List and Tweet and See that Kingdom Arrows is heading up for the year of 2011.  Please consider joining in starting the end of January by keeping a list of all the birds you hear or see over the month.

  1. Pet rabbits are a great subject since you can really get up close and learn a little more about mammals. One thing we learned in the summer series of OHC that learning to compare things is a great way to learn more so comparing a rabbit and a dog is a great idea.

Thanks so much for sharing your study and your link.

  2. Tweet and See sounds like fun. We are already keeping a Backyard Bird Log for our science study this year so when the end of January gets here I will see which birds we have listed. A lot more have visited us this year compared to the year before. Today I even saw a Downy Woodpecker in the woods (thanks to my binoculars - they do make great presents! I hope that you are blessed with some soon too.).
