Outdoor Hour Challenge #2

Using Your Words

This week we are doing The Outdoor Hour Challenge #2.  Click here to visit The Handbook of Nature Study blog.

We were to take a walk in our yard, we chose the woods behind our house.

We were to remain quiet and keep our eyes open to observe.  It was a drizzly, cool day.

When we came back in, we were to--

Use one word describing what we heard:
  • Mom:  tweet
  • Joy-bug-: drip
  • Gracie-girl: crunch
Use two words to describe something we saw:
  • Mom:  green moss
  • Joy-bug: red leaf
  • Gracie-girl: black bird
Use three words for something we felt:
  • Mom: sharp, pointy sweetgum
  • Joy-bug: cold, small drop
  • Gracie-girl: crunchy, vein-y leaf
I have to say, this was harder than I thought for my 5 and 7 year olds.  They don't tend to be strong at words, so it was a stretch for them.  They are more concrete than poetic like Kae-Kae was at the same age.

  1. What did Jip the dog say? Dad wishes he could have gone on the trek too.

  2. I think you all did a very good job on the words. I think for some children this is a hard exercise but the more you do it, either just orally or eventually in a nature journal, the better they will get at it.

Thank you so much for sharing your nature study with the OHC.
